Walking the Spiritual Path: Pride and Ego

‘It’s impossible” said pride. “It’s risky” said experience. “It’s pointless” said reason. “Give it a try” whispered the heart. Anonymous

To be the spiritual being we are put on this earth to be, we need to choose. Who is going to run our life? The ego and conscious mind (what I call the human self) or our higher mind and soul (our spiritual self.)

We cannot serve two masters. We cannot turn over some aspects of our life to our soul while holding onto others. Not sure what this means? Think about this: Who is in charge of your money? Your career? Where you live? What you eat? What you wear? Whose words come out of your mouth when you speak? Whose thoughts run through your mind when you are silent?

We like to say that we turn to our higher mind and soul in all things. Perhaps we even start there. But what happens along the way? Do we take the guidance our soul gives us and then pick-and-chose? Do we take what we like and ignore the rest?

Being a manifested soul is all or nothing.. We cannot disregard our higher self in somethings without disregarding her/him in everything. The ego and conscious mind love to tell us that fence-straddling is fine. But that is another lie from the ego. The truth is that we must commit with our whole heart. Once we make a choice, we must stay there. To do anything else — going back and forth between soul and ego — is to chose conscious mind over higher mind. We may think we do this only in some things. Sadly, it means in all things. There simply is no division in the life that belongs to soul.

Pride and ego will assure you everything is fine. The truth is that “Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Affirmation: I am one with my higher mind and soul in all things. It is my higher mind’s will, not my will, be done.
